24" RFT tool demo in Louisville, KY. |

In early September Russell demonstrated
our new 24” RFT Tool in Louisville, KY. The 24” cast iron pipeline
was over 2000 feet in length with a wall thickness of ¾”. Inside the
pipe was a cement mortar lining.
The pipe was being replaced with a larger pipe, so the owner,
Louisville Water, agreed to allow Battelle Memorial Institute, who
was the project manager on behalf of the EPA (Environmental
Protection Agency) to use the line to test nine different NDT
technologies.
We had one week in order to demonstrate our new 24” Tool; however,
the Tool did not arrive on site until Wednesday and it was Friday
morning before we performed our demo (Thursday was a practice run).
As we were leaving Friday to return to Canada, the pressure was on
us to get it right first time.

The Tool entered the pipe at
8:00 am and was being disassembled at the far end at noon …
success!
The Tool performed flawlessly and the data from the pipe was
very clean. Our technology was one of only two Tools that
measure the wall thickness from inside the pipe. Normally
the Tool would have been pumped through the pipe with the
water flow; however, as it was out of service, we elected to
winch it through with our wireline truck.
The photos show part of the Tool being lowered into the
excavation, and a data capture showing wall-loss defects in
the line.
The Team on site was: Ad Shatat, Dan Lingnau, Yun-Ming Yu
and Dave Russell. |
