Adept Pro?
9. Cool, where can I get more information
about the Ferroscope and Adept Pro program?
10.How
does the “MAX PHASE” function work?
1. What cable do I use
to connect from my Ferroscope 308 to my PC?
For older
Ferroscopes with an Ethernet connector:
There are
two kinds of Ethernet twisted-pair cabling: 'straight
through' (the most common kind) and 'crossover'. You must
use a crossover cable to connect your computer to a
Ferroscope.
For newer
Ferroscopes with a USB connecter:
Use a
standard A-to-B USB cable, which is available at most
computer stores. We recommend using a high-quality
brand-name cable, such as Belkin.
2. Why do I get a
communications error when I try to establish connection with
my Ferroscope?
If your
Ferroscope is an older Ethernet model, a working Ethernet
connection is required for communication with the
Ferroscope. The NetBEUI Windows protocol is needed to get
your Ethernet connection working. Refer to your Adept Pro
manual for more information.
3.
What is the proper sequence that
I should use to run the Ferroscope?
Before you start this procedure,
the
Ferroscope and computer need to be connected with either a
USB cable or a crossover Ethernet cable. Running major
software applications simultaneously with Adept Pro may
cause conflicts. Exit or disable other software and
functions that access the network if you are using an
Ethernet Ferroscope.
Turn on
the computer and Ferroscope 308. During the start-up
sequence, the Ferroscope 308 displays a “STARTUP” message
on the front panel display. When the front panel displays
a message similar to “1RE 8RD”, you are ready for the next
step.
On the
computer, double-click on the Adept Pro icon on you
desktop or in the menu. Adept Pro will then appear on the
screen. On the main menu select Settings, then Instrument
Settings. Click the “Yes” button to confirm that you would
like to connect to the Ferroscope. For a few seconds Adept
Pro should display a message that says "Ferroscope
located. Establishing connection with Ferroscope.”
Adept Pro
and the Ferroscope 308 are now connected and
communicating. The connection is confirmed by the icons on
the bottom right of your screen, showing a cable between
the Ferroscope and computer icons with a moving green
pulse.
4.
Is Adept Pro compatible with
Windows 95/98/ME/NT?
Yes Adept Pro is compatible with Windows
95, Windows 98, Windows ME and Windows NT.
5.
Is Adept Pro compatible with
Windows 2000/XP?
Adept Pro
works very well with Windows 2000 and XP while performing
analyses. If you wish to connect Adept Pro to a Ferroscope
308, the Ferroscope must be the newer model that uses a
USB cable to communicate with your computer.
6.
Can I connect my PC to the
Ferroscope 308 via a USB port?
Yes, but
only on newer units manufactured on or after 2003.
Factory-original units built before 2003 will connect via
RJ45 crossover Ethernet cable. However for an additional
cost you can have your Ferroscope 308 upgraded to USB and
have it run on either Windows 2000 or XP.
7.
What are the PC requirements
to run the Adept Pro program?
Minimum PC
requirements are a 1 GHz Pentium or equivalent, 128 MB
RAM, 2 GB hard drive, 10BaseT Ethernet connection or USB
port, and a screen resolution of at least 1024 x 768.
8.
Do I need a security key to run
with my version of Adept Pro?
Starting with Adept Pro version 1.0 you
are not required a security key to run with the Ferroscope
308.
9.

10. How does the “MAX
PHASE” function work?
A: When displaying the signal phase, sometimes the
phase change will “cross 360 degrees” causing a large,
sudden signal which usually reverses direction for several
data points then comes back to the baseline after the
feature that caused the signal has been passed by the
probe. When you enter a number in “MAX PHASE” Adept-pro
will subtract 360 degrees from any phase reading that
exceeds the number that you enter.
On the bottom task bar you will see the scaled and
rotated phase reading (obtained after the data has been
set to nominal), followed by the raw phase reading (in
brackets). If you want to know what number to enter:
1) place the curser on the baseline just before
any signal that seems to be crossing the 360
threshold. Note the phase reading (not raw phase)
2) place the curser over the signal that crosses
the 360 threshold and note the phase reading.
3) Take the number that is negative, add 10 to 20
degrees to it and enter it as a positive number into
MAX PHASE, click Apply
4) The signal that crossed the 360 threshold
should now look normal (no sudden reversal of
direction)
