Defects as predicted in BC freshwater supply pipeline
BC Hydro has begun their excavations to repair defects detected during PICA's recent in-line inspection.
Sr. Mechanical Engineer, John Kohut commented: "the measurements were very accurate". Defects located so far are due to improper installation of yellow jacket shrink-sleeves. Water got underneath the shrink sleeve and locally attacked the pipe, eventually leading to a leak. See photos below.
Interesting to note is that leak detection services performed on the pipeline last year were only able to detect one leak, when in fact there were five through holes and other areas where the pits were as deep as 85% through ("leaks in waiting").
