Long-Range U.T. training completed in Caribbean
Ed Brain, senior NDT technician and training instructor, teaches a class of Caribbean students how to operate the Isonic 2005 in "Long Range UT" mode.
Long range UT is available on Isonic instruments to allow technicians to inspect tank floors from the outside of the tank while it remains in service. The tank floor is inspected for a distance of up to 2m by placing the special transducer on the chime (an extension of the floorplate that is outside the tank). The probe can be scanned in time mode while the instrument displays the data in a color map, such as pictured below. Pitting on the topside and underneath the tank floor is clearly detectable. Long range UT can be used for other applications such as pipeline risers, detection of corrosion under pipe supports, scans of pressure vessel shells, scans of metal light posts and many other applications.
