If you’re looking to extend the life of your pipes and boilers, as well as take proactive inspection measures that prevent costly failures, Russell NDE is here to help. Read on to learn more about the applications and benefits of ultrasonic inspection below!

What is Ultrasonic Inspection?

Ultrasonic inspection refers to a method of non-destructive testing that uses high-frequency sound energy to conduct precise examinations of an object and its materials and make measurements. Ultrasonic inspection can be used for a wide range of applications (more on that below) to detect flaws, make dimensional measurements, analyze material composition, and more.

Wide Range of Applications

As mentioned above, ultrasonic tools can be used for an extensive range of applications, including surveying pipes of different sizes, thicknesses, and purposes. Advantages to using ultrasonic tools include their sensitivity to both surface and subsurface abnormalities, superior depth penetration for flaw detection, pulse-echo techniques require single-sided access only, minimal preparation needs, and, of course, exceptional accuracy.

Russell NDE specializes in the application of ultrasonic inspection equipment for the following purposes:

  • Welds: to detect welding flaws
  • Structural steel and pipes for fatigue crack detection and sizing
  • Storage tank floors from the outside “chime plate” to detect internal corrosion
  • Aircraft components for fatigue and corrosion
  • Pressure vessels and piping for corrosion damage
