Have you discovered the benefits of nondestructive testing? As the preferred method for pipelines, boilers, pressure vessels and storage tank evaluations, ultrasonic thickness gauges are trusted by industry leaders all over the world to provide accurate thickness readings that help prevent internal wall loss and pitting from leading to disastrous results. Since being introduced in the 1940's ultrasonic technology has rapidly developed into a fast, reliable and versatile method of evaluation that is utilized today with miniature instruments that offer flawless results in double quick time. Suitable for use with metals, plastic, composites, fibreglass and more, Ultrasonic gauges are an invaluable resource for material thickness evaluation. Learn more about how they work, as well as the models available from Russell NDE Systems, below.
How Ultrasonic Thickness Gauging Works
Ultrasonic thickness gauges work by using the same principles as sonar technology, using mechanical energy generated from piezo-electric transducers to measure the thickness of many objects from one side. The ultrasonic device measures the time it takes for sound pulses to travel through the object and reflect back from the inside surface or far wall. The reflection of the pulse will indicate the depth and thickness of boundaries found, and the operator can then read the thickness directly on the gauge.
Gauge Types
Commercial ultrasonic thickness gauges are divided into two categories: corrosion and precision gauges. Corrosion gauges are primarily intended to measure the wall thickness of metal pipes, tanks, structural parts, and pressure vessels, each of which can often harbour internal corrosion that remains unseen on the exterior. Corrosion gauges are calibrated to detect and analyze the remaining thickness in rough, corroded, test pieces utilizing dual element transducers for accurate results.
Precision gauges use single element transducers and are best suited for all applications, including smooth metals, pipes and railway rails, plastics, fibreglass, composites, rubber, and ceramics. There are many varieties of transducers available, which makes precision gauges versatile and flexible in their application.
