It’s Time to Dig Deeper

One of the biggest risks facing any job site, factory, or containment facility is the unknown. While pipes and boilers can often look “fine” on the outside, the exterior may be hiding internal corrosion or pitting that poses a significant risk to your operations. Electro-Magnetic Acoustic Transducers (EMAT) utilize a highly refined Ultrasonic Testing (UT) technique that generates sound in the component being inspected by varying the magnetic field from a magnet through a control coil. This makes EMAT a completely non-couplant device compared to conventional piezoelectric transducers.

EMAT devices use a high-frequency field generated by electrical coils, which interact with a static or DC field, created by magnets, to generate a force that produces an elastic wave, which is used to couple ultrasonic energy into the part. EMAT transducers can generate all wave modes used in ultrasonic tests and are widely used for applications like:

  • Assessing in-service piping for internal pitting
  • Inspection of heat exchanger shells
  • Assessing remaining wall thickness of plates such as ships' hulls and deck plates
  • Inspecting pressure vessel heads and shells

Specific advantages of using EMAT devices include:

  • EMAT does not require couplant for transmitting sound, making it ideal for hot OR cold parts.
  • Can inspect through coatings with results remaining unaffected by oxidization, or surface roughness.
